Latarjet Procedure

When recurrent shoulder dislocations wear away the bone of the glenoid socket, standard labral repairs (Bankart) are highly likely to fail. The Latarjet procedure is a specialized bone-block reconstruction designed to restore stability in complex cases.

The Bone Block Transfer Mechanics

Frequent shoulder dislocations cause the humerus ball to grind down the front edge of the glenoid socket. When socket bone loss exceeds 15-20%, there is insufficient surface area to keep the joint centered.

The Latarjet procedure fixes this structural bone deficit. Dr. Vikrant Sinha Roy transfers a small bone block from your shoulder blade (the coracoid process, along with its attached conjoint tendon) to the front edge of the glenoid socket. The bone is secured with surgical screws. This increases the socket surface area and creates a "sling effect" using the conjoint tendon, stabilizing the joint dynamically.

Book Bone Loss Assessment

Pre-Operative Preparation & Clinical Evaluation

A successful orthopaedic outcome starts with meticulous planning. Prior to scheduling any procedure, patients undergo a thorough medical evaluation, including cardiac clearances, complete blood profiles, and tailored joint imaging.

3D Anatomical Mapping

CT scans or high-res MRIs are loaded into the computer software to pre-plan bone cuts and implant size before entering the theatre.

Pre-Hab Exercises

Mild quadriceps and core strengthening exercises are recommended to build muscle tone, which speeds up postoperative recovery.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation & Recovery Pathways

Rehabilitation is a critical phase of recovery. Following surgery, Dr. Vikrant Sinha Roy's team coordinates with clinical physiotherapists to execute structured post-op exercises, facilitating joint mobilization, restoring gait patterns, and strengthening surrounding muscle groups.

01

Phase 1: Mobilization (Week 1-2)

Focus on wound healing, swelling management, and walking with support.

02

Phase 2: Strengthening (Week 3-6)

Transitioning to walking independently, climbing stairs, and building muscle flexibility.

03

Phase 3: Functional Restoration (Week 6+)

Returning to normal daily work, traveling, and light recreational sports.

Patient Success Stories

"I had severe shoulder pain due to a rotator cuff tear and couldn't lift my arm to comb my hair. Dr. Vikrant performed keyhole rotator cuff repair. The recovery was gradual but with structured physiotherapy, I have regained complete range of motion."

— Rajeev Dutta, 52, Kolkata

"After my shoulder dislocated multiple times during sports, I consulted Dr. Vikrant. He performed an arthroscopic Bankart repair. The surgery restored shoulder stability completely. I have returned to badminton without any fear of dislocation."

— Soumyajit Das, 28, Salt Lake

Shoulder Care FAQs

You will wear a sling for 4 to 6 weeks to allow the tendon to heal to the bone. Passive physiotherapy starts in the first week, followed by active strengthening at 6 weeks. Full return to overhead sports takes about 4 to 6 months.

A reverse shoulder replacement is recommended for patients who have severe shoulder arthritis combined with a massive, unrepairable rotator cuff tear, or when traditional shoulder replacement has failed.
