Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation
Condition Guide

Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder instability occurs when the lining cartilage (labrum) or bones wear away, causing the humerus ball to repeatedly slip out of its glenoid socket. Dr. Vikrant Sinha Roy provides expert stabilization solutions.

Understanding Shoulder Instability

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body, structured like a golf ball on a tee. The joint relies on a protective cartilage ring (the labrum) to deepen the socket and act as a suction stabilizer.

An initial traumatic dislocation often tears this labrum (a Bankart lesion). Once torn, the joint loses stability, leading to recurrent slippage or dislocations during simple actions like sleeping or reaching overhead. If dislocations occur frequently, the bones grind against each other, causing bone loss at the edge of the socket (glenoid bone loss).

Treatment Pathways

Arthroscopic Bankart Repair

For patients with a torn labrum but minimal bone loss. Keyhole anchors are used to secure the cartilage back to the socket edge.

Latarjet Bone Block Transfer

For complex instability with socket bone loss exceeding 15%. Transfers a small bone block to widen the socket, creating a strong mechanical barrier.

Pre-Operative Preparation & Clinical Evaluation

A successful orthopaedic outcome starts with meticulous planning. Prior to scheduling any procedure, patients undergo a thorough medical evaluation, including cardiac clearances, complete blood profiles, and tailored joint imaging.

3D Anatomical Mapping

CT scans or high-res MRIs are loaded into the computer software to pre-plan bone cuts and implant size before entering the theatre.

Pre-Hab Exercises

Mild quadriceps and core strengthening exercises are recommended to build muscle tone, which speeds up postoperative recovery.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation & Recovery Pathways

Rehabilitation is a critical phase of recovery. Following surgery, Dr. Vikrant Sinha Roy's team coordinates with clinical physiotherapists to execute structured post-op exercises, facilitating joint mobilization, restoring gait patterns, and strengthening surrounding muscle groups.

01

Phase 1: Mobilization (Week 1-2)

Focus on wound healing, swelling management, and walking with support.

02

Phase 2: Strengthening (Week 3-6)

Transitioning to walking independently, climbing stairs, and building muscle flexibility.

03

Phase 3: Functional Restoration (Week 6+)

Returning to normal daily work, traveling, and light recreational sports.

Patient Success Stories

"I had severe shoulder pain due to a rotator cuff tear and couldn't lift my arm to comb my hair. Dr. Vikrant performed keyhole rotator cuff repair. The recovery was gradual but with structured physiotherapy, I have regained complete range of motion."

— Rajeev Dutta, 52, Kolkata

"After my shoulder dislocated multiple times during sports, I consulted Dr. Vikrant. He performed an arthroscopic Bankart repair. The surgery restored shoulder stability completely. I have returned to badminton without any fear of dislocation."

— Soumyajit Das, 28, Salt Lake

Shoulder Care FAQs

You will wear a sling for 4 to 6 weeks to allow the tendon to heal to the bone. Passive physiotherapy starts in the first week, followed by active strengthening at 6 weeks. Full return to overhead sports takes about 4 to 6 months.

A reverse shoulder replacement is recommended for patients who have severe shoulder arthritis combined with a massive, unrepairable rotator cuff tear, or when traditional shoulder replacement has failed.
